The Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi) was developed by Carbon Disclosure Project, UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute and the WWF. Its goal is to help organisations set ambitious and meaningful GHG reduction targets.

Getting to grips with GHG Emissions

There are 3 kinds of GHG emissions to control, Scope 1, 2 and 3. 

Scope 1 are direct emissions that come from business operations and include the energy consumed which can be directly controlled.

Scope 2 are indirect emissions generated by producers of consumed energy and they can’t be directly controlled.

Scope 3 are indirect emissions that come from across the value chain and these are usually the largest source of the overall GHG footprint. Although these can’t be directly controlled, they can be heavily influenced by collaboration.

Scope 3 data is difficult to access because it resides in potentially thousands of organisations. Getting this data can be time-consuming and very expensive. Not all suppliers can or will respond quickly because they may not have access to the data they need to disclose. And in many cases, the data provided isn’t accurate or current so it must be validated before it can be used.

The Ecodesk SBTi Solution

SBTi DataEngine© combines the accuracy and clarity of an Ecodesk GHG survey with the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

For AI to work and deliver results that can be trusted, it draws a representative sample of GHG data from an Ecodesk GHG survey. The resulting data set is then used by AI to predict Scope 3 data emissions across a large population.

Using our proven processes, we create and launch a survey on a sample of respondents to gather relevant GHG emissions data. When this survey is complete, we validate the GHG data ready for input into the AI model.

This sample data set then ‘trains’ the AI algorithms and is combined with external data sources to build a holistic and reliable view. When there’s a high degree of statistical confidence, the model is ready to be applied to several thousand or tens of thousands of respondents. The resulting output enables decisions to be made on how to engage with each supplier to reduce their GHG footprint and your Scope 3 emissions.
